How to build an elite landscape company and set yourself up for success

How did Mark Bradley grow his business from backyard business into one of the Top 100 landscape contractors in North America? The answer is through job costing. Now the CEO of LMN Software, Mark, will teach you all about how to build an elite landscape in this new episode of Landscape Disruptor.

In this episode of the Landscape Disruptor Podcast, host Stanley Genadek talks with Mark Bradley, founder, and CEO of LMN (Landscape Management Network). The software provides the tools and education for hardworking landscapers to grow more efficient and profitable businesses. And it’s safe to say Mark knows about profitable businesses: he increased his former company, TBG Landscape, to $50 million in thirty years.

It’s All About Job Costing

After a few years in the industry, once his business was worth about $10 million, Mark found it hard to manage customer expectations, payroll, invoicing, and billing. It was becoming a paperwork nightmare. He had to balance out his offers to create stable profits across the board. The answer to his problem? Job costing.

Mark’s number one tip for every landscape is “figure out your job costing.” Business owners need to understand how much it costs to do the job they’re selling. In turn, they’ll price it right the next time and will be able to focus on efficiency when doing work. Consequently, their business will become more and more profitable. And that’s why Mark built LMN in the first place. The software eliminates all waste so your business can compete at market prices.

Mark Bradley and Words of Wisdom

Mark has two pieces of advice for landscapers who are getting started.

Learn technical skills
According to Mark, that’s the easiest part. Most landscapers do their job perfectly and know how to handle almost any situation in the field. But their business will never be profitable if they don’t…

Learn the business skills
Mark says before you start doing any contract work as an owner-operator-entrepreneur, you need to understand how to run a business. Because doing so profitably is the hardest part of the job, by far.

Another tip is to use LMN’s free app 4 O’Clock at 4. With the app, your employees will answer four questions every day, at four pm. They let the owner know what they’ve done and what needs to change by answering these simple questions:

  • What are your top 3 priorities/goals for tomorrow?
  • What did you get completed today?
  • What obstacles are slowing you down?
  • What do you need from me?

With the app, supervisors and owners will be updated in real-time, instead of waiting until it’s too late. Getting into the habit of doing so will drive efficiency at every level.

How do you keep your crew accountable? What’s the best way to grow your landscaping business? Listen to this new episode of Landscape Disruptors to find out!
